Kaweco Pens

Kaweco: The evolution of a brand

In 1883, near the University city of Bonn in Germany, Carl Luce and Friedrich Enßlen manufactured wooden dip pens under the name "Heidelberger Federhalterfabrik"--which translates as "Heidelberg dip pen factory." They also started importing nibs and fountain pens from A. Morton & Co.,  in New York.

The company was taken over by Heinrich Koch and Rudolph Weber in 1889, moved production to Handschuhsheim and began manufacturing products under the brand names Perkeo, Omega, and Kaweco; Its name derives from "Koch, Weber, and Compagnie", which included the initials HF (Heidelberger Federhalterfabrik). In 1908, Kaweco received a patent for a screw thread that prevented ink from leaking. The pen was known as the Kaweco safety pen and was advertised heavily at the time.

Kaweco Sport Pen was introduced in 1911 and is still available in the market today. The success of this series, along with other products, helped pave the way for expansions in several countries such as Berlin, Paris, Zurich, and Vienna--as well as agencies around the world. Two years later, Kaweco produced their own line of gold nibs with help from their American partners, A Morton & Co., as well as other representatives from New York and By the year 1921, Kaweco was already producing around 130,000 fountain pens yearly with 600 employees.

Despite experiencing several setbacks during World War II, including financial difficulties, Kaweco has continued to be a well-known brand, and its product range has grown. The brand's classic design and high-quality manufacturing make its pens popular among customers. Founded in 1883, Kaweco has grown into one of the most popular writing instrument brands worldwide. Fountain pens, ballpoint pens, and rollerball pens are all available in the brand's bestselling series, Kaweco Sport. The same line also features matching push and clutch pencils.
