Which fountain pen should you choose?
Best fountain pens for beginners
If you're new to fountain pens, start with a lightweight, easy-to-fill pen in a medium nib. The PILOT Kakuno (from $28) is the most forgiving first pen — a smiling nib face, a smooth medium flow, and a body that won't roll off your desk. The LAMY Safari is the other classic choice: an ergonomic grip, a wide range of nib sizes, and converter compatibility out of the box. For something more pocketable, the Kaweco Sport clips into a shirt pocket and writes the moment you uncap it.
Nib sizes explained
Japanese nibs (PILOT, Sailor) run finer than European nibs (LAMY, Pelikan) of the same stated size. A rough guide for Singapore writers:
- EF (Extra Fine) — very thin line, good for small handwriting or technical notes
- F (Fine) — the most popular size; works on most paper including standard notebooks
- M (Medium) — broader, wetter, more expressive; best on fountain-pen-friendly paper
- B (Broad) — noticeable line variation; suited for display writing or calligraphy

Frequently asked questions
Which fountain pen is best for beginners in Singapore?
The PILOT Kakuno and LAMY Safari are the two most recommended starter pens — both under $60, easy to fill, and widely available. The Kaweco Sport is a great option if you want something more pocketable.
Are fountain pens good for everyday writing?
Yes — a capped fountain pen with a fine or medium nib writes reliably on most paper. Many Cityluxe customers use a LAMY Safari or TWSBI Eco daily for journaling, note-taking, and correspondence.
Do you offer engraving on fountain pens?
Yes. Most metal-body and resin pens can be engraved with a name, initials, or short message. See engraving options and turnaround times →
What is the difference between EF, F, M and B nibs?
Nib width controls line thickness and ink flow. Extra Fine (EF) and Fine (F) suit small handwriting and standard paper; Medium (M) and Broad (B) suit larger scripts and fountain-pen-friendly paper. Japanese nibs run about one size finer than European nibs of the same label.
Do you ship fountain pens across Singapore?
Yes — free standard shipping on orders over $30. Same-day delivery options are available for selected Singapore postal codes. We also ship to Malaysia and regionally.
