Overview

Leuchtturm1917 — The Lighthouse of Notebooks

Pick up a Leuchtturm1917 notebook and you will notice something immediately: every page is numbered. Not as an afterthought — every single page, printed from the factory, waiting to be indexed and archived. That single detail explains why Leuchtturm1917 has become the notebook of choice for bullet journalists, writers, researchers, architects, and everyone in between who takes their paper seriously. Leuchtturm (German for "lighthouse") has been making quality archival products since 1917 in Hamburg, Germany. For most of that history they were known to librarians and collectors for stamp albums and collector's binders — people who understood that careful organisation outlasts any individual project. When they applied that same archival philosophy to notebooks in the 2000s, they created a product that resonated globally. Numbered pages, a table of contents at the front, a gusseted rear pocket, a page finder ribbon, and an archiving label on the spine: small details, thoughtfully executed, that make the difference between a notebook you fill and discard and one you actually reference for years. In Singapore, Leuchtturm1917 has a particular following among bullet journalists, planner community members, and corporate gifting buyers who appreciate the broad colour palette, reliable 80g/m² paper, and the available embossing personalisation. Cityluxe is Singapore's authorised Leuchtturm1917 retailer, carrying the full range: every notebook format, the Drehgriffel pen collection, pen loops, refills, planners, and specialty journals from the complete Leuchtturm1917 collection. Since 1917

A Century of Careful Organisation

Leuchtturm1917's story is not a story of a pen company that expanded into notebooks, or a design studio looking for the next trend. It is the story of an archival products company — one that already understood the value of systematic organisation — that brought that discipline to the everyday journal.
1917
Founded in Hamburg, Germany. The name Leuchtturm — lighthouse — signals the mission: to be an orientation point, a reliable landmark in the chaos of information. Early products focus on philatelic and collectors' albums, applying archival principles to personal organisation.
1960s–1990s
Leuchtturm expands its collector's product range across Europe. The brand becomes a trusted name among librarians, philatelists, and anyone who takes the long-term storage of documents seriously. The quality standards that will define their notebooks are quietly developed during this era.
2004
Leuchtturm1917 launches its first hardcover notebooks. The breakthrough feature — numbered pages and a printed table of contents — distinguishes the product immediately from competitors. The archiving label on the spine and the gusseted rear pocket complete what becomes the definitive Leuchtturm formula.
2015
Leuchtturm1917 launches the official Bullet Journal Edition notebook in collaboration with Ryder Carroll, creator of the Bullet Journal method. The partnership validates both products: BuJo practitioners find their ideal notebook, and Leuchtturm1917 reaches an entirely new audience of productivity-focused users worldwide.
2019
Leuchtturm1917 wins the Red Dot Design Award — twice. The Bauhaus 100 Collection celebrates the centenary of the Bauhaus movement with a limited collaboration notebook series. The Drehgriffel Nr. 2 Mechanical Pencil wins in the writing instruments category, signalling the brand's serious expansion into pens.
2022
The Drehgriffel Nr. 2 Mechanical Pencil wins the Red Dot Design Award in the stationery category. Leuchtturm1917 launches its re:combine colour system — a framework for mixing and matching notebooks, pens, and pen loops across a coordinated palette, turning stationery into a personal design system.
Today
Leuchtturm1917 is available in over 100 countries. In Singapore, Cityluxe stocks the complete range at 601 Sims Drive — notebooks, pens, planners, specialty journals, and accessories across the full re:combine colour system.
What Makes It Different

The Five Details That Define Leuchtturm1917

Most notebook brands compete on paper quality or aesthetics. Leuchtturm1917 competes on organisation. Every feature in the standard hardcover notebook serves a specific purpose that becomes apparent only after you fill your first notebook and try to find something in it six months later.
Leuchtturm1917 A5 Medium Hardcover Notebook Black Dotted — numbered pages and table of contents at Cityluxe Singapore
The Leuchtturm System

Five Features That Earn the Price

  • Numbered pages — All 251 pages (hardcover) are printed with page numbers. Combined with the table of contents, you can actually reference your own notes months later.
  • Table of contents — Four pages at the front, ready to fill in as you go. Index your most important entries as you write them.
  • Gusseted rear pocket — An expanding pocket that holds receipts, folded notes, and small documents. Works harder than the typical flat pocket.
  • Page finder ribbon — Two ribbon bookmarks so you can mark your current writing page and a reference page simultaneously.
  • Archiving label — A clear label on the spine for subject and date, so your filled notebooks sit on a shelf as a proper reference library.
The paper is 80g/m² acid-free, chosen to resist fountain pen bleed-through while remaining light enough for a portable notebook. The thread binding allows the book to lie flat at any page without cracking the spine — a detail that matters for anyone who needs both hands free while writing. The hardcover is stiff enough to write against in the absence of a desk. The Flagship

Notebook Formats — From A6 to A5 and Beyond

Leuchtturm1917 builds the same feature set across multiple sizes, cover styles, and paper weights. Every format carries numbered pages, a table of contents, and the gusseted pocket — the question is simply which size, weight, and cover suits your use.

Softcover — SGD 44

A5 Medium Softcover

Same A5 format, flexible cover instead of rigid board. 123 numbered pages (vs 251 in hardcover). Lighter, thinner, slightly easier to tuck into a slim bag. The softcover is a common starting point for Leuchtturm newcomers — same paper, same features, lower price and page count. A5 Medium Hardcover — 411 Pages

The same A5 hardcover format but with 411 numbered pages instead of 251 — roughly 60% more writing space in the same footprint. Ideal for heavy journalers who want to reduce how often they change notebooks, or for long-running projects that benefit from continuity. A5 120G Edition

The 120G Edition uses heavier 120g/m² paper — the same format as the standard A5 hardcover but built for fountain pens and brush pens that bleed through 80g/m² paper. Fewer pages (203 numbered) because each page is thicker, but the writing experience is noticeably more premium. The paper takes ink without ghosting, making this the preferred choice for fountain pen users.

A6 Pocket Hardcover — SGD 35

Half the size of A5 (105 × 148mm), the A6 Pocket is Leuchtturm's carry-everywhere notebook. 187 numbered pages, the same hardcover binding and feature set, at a price point that makes it easy to keep one on you permanently. Popular as a daily pocket notebook alongside a larger A5, or as a standalone for people who prefer very compact journaling. A6 Pocket also comes in a wide range of colours across Dotted, Ruled, and Plain: Navy, Lilac, Sage, Stone Blue, Rising Sun, and more.

B6+ Softcover Paperback — SGD 39

The B6+ (125 × 190mm) sits between A6 and A5 in size — slightly taller and wider than a paperback novel. The flexible paperback cover makes it the slimmest and lightest Leuchtturm format, useful for pocket-sized writing that does not require a rigid cover. Available in Dotted, Ruled, and Plain across a range of colours including Rising Sun, Sage, Forest Green, Lilac, and Stone Blue. BuJo System

Bullet Journal Edition 2 — SGD 58

The Leuchtturm1917 Bullet Journal Edition 2 is not just a dotted notebook — it is a complete Bullet Journal starter system built into the book itself. The Edition 2 redesign adds pre-printed migration tools, an improved key and legend page, a collections section, and a more detailed future log layout, making it the fastest way to start the Bullet Journal method without having to set up the system from scratch. The Edition 2 also comes in Yellow24 and limited colourways. For a compact version, the Bullet Journal Pocket A6 (SGD 41) offers the same pre-printed system in a smaller softcover format — in Black, Turquoise25, and Yellow24.
What's Inside BJ Edition 2 (vs Standard A5 Dotted)
  • Pre-printed index, key/legend, and collections pages
  • Future log pages with migration prompts
  • Dedicated daily log page structure with habit tracker
  • Improved dot grid — lighter dots that photograph more cleanly
  • SGD 11 more than the standard A5 Hardcover (SGD 47)
Purpose-Built

Specialty Journals

Beyond the core notebook formats, Leuchtturm1917 produces a series of purpose-built journals where the layout is designed around a specific use case. Each maintains the standard Leuchtturm build quality but adds pre-printed structure for its intended purpose.

Sketchnote Journal — SGD 65

For visual thinkers, the Sketchnote Journal uses 160g/m² paper — heavier than any other Leuchtturm format — to handle brush pens, markers, and mixed media without bleed-through. The landscape-oriented A5 format encourages wider compositions. Available in Olive and Vanilla. Writing Instruments

Drehgriffel — Leuchtturm's Pen Collection

Drehgriffel is German for "twist stylus" — the mechanism that extends and retracts the nib with a barrel twist rather than a click. Leuchtturm1917 revived the Drehgriffel name (originally from 1920s desk pens) for a modern pen collection designed to coordinate with their notebook colour system. The collection spans gel pens, ballpoint pens, and a mechanical pencil, all using the same twist mechanism and colour palette as the notebooks.

Drehgriffel Nr. 1 — Gel Pen

The Nr. 1 Gel writes with black ink (0.6mm tip) — a consistent, smooth line that suits dotted-grid journaling, hand lettering, and everyday note-taking. The twist mechanism is satisfyingly solid; the barrel is triangular in cross-section for a firm grip. Compatible with the gel refill (SGD 11) and the refill pack of 2 (SGD 16). Colours available: Black, Cherry, Deep Sea, Dusty Rose, Indigo, Navy, Pumpkin, Sage, Sunflower, Stone Blue, Rising Sun and more. Shop Nr. 1 Gel →

2026 Planners

Leuchtturm1917's 2026 planner range carries the same construction quality as the notebooks — thread-bound hardcover, 80g/m² acid-free paper — but with a calendar structure pre-printed. The Weekly Planner + Notebook combines a full week-per-spread planner with ruled notebook pages in the same volume. The Daily Planner gives each day its own full page. The B6+ Wallet format adds a slim pocket for cards or cash. The 2026 Weekly Planner + Notebook comes in Navy, Dusty Rose, Forest Green, Rising Sun, Lilac, Port Red, and Sage. Pen Compatibility on 80g/m² Paper

Leuchtturm1917's standard 80g/m² paper performs well with ballpoints, gel pens, and most fine-liner pens. Fountain pens with medium and broad nibs may show minimal show-through; wet writers (Pilot Iroshizuku, Diamine) can ghost lightly on the reverse of the page. This is expected on 80g/m² paper — if fountain pen show-through is a concern, use the 120G Edition. The Drehgriffel Nr. 1 Gel writes at 0.6mm — clean, consistent, designed for this paper. Singapore Tips

Leuchtturm1917 120G Edition Sage Notebook — premium paper for Singapore's humidity at Cityluxe
Climate & Care

Using Leuchtturm1917 in Singapore's Climate

  • Humidity and paper: Singapore's 80–90% relative humidity can cause paper to absorb moisture over time. Store filled notebooks spine-up on a shelf with occasional airflow rather than flat stacks.
  • Fountain pens + tropical climate: Ink dries more slowly in high humidity. If you use fountain pens in Leuchtturm notebooks, allow slightly more drying time before closing the book or turning pages.
  • The 120G Edition: For fountain pen users, the extra paper weight provides significantly better wet-ink handling — the better investment in Singapore's humidity.
  • Dot grid for tropical journaling: The dotted format is the most popular in Singapore because it handles both structured planning and free-form journaling on the same page — practical for people who mix task lists, notes, and sketches.
  • Corporate gifting: Leuchtturm1917 A5 Hardcovers are a strong corporate gift at SGD 47, especially personalised with notebook embossing. A Navy or Black with the company name on the cover communicates quality without ostentation. Pair with a Drehgriffel Ballpoint for a complete set. Contact Cityluxe corporate gifting for bulk orders with personalisation.
  • Event and workshop favours: Softcovers at SGD 44 make cost-effective workshop journals. The Some Lines A Day (SGD 61) is a distinctive gift for leadership programmes and team milestones.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Leuchtturm1917 and Moleskine?
The key differences are in the details. Leuchtturm1917 has numbered pages and a printed table of contents — Moleskine does not. Leuchtturm's gusseted pocket expands; Moleskine's is flat. Leuchtturm thread-binds its hardcovers for proper lay-flat; early Moleskines used glue binding that can crack over time. Leuchtturm paper is 80g/m² acid-free; Moleskine is typically 70g/m². Most experienced journalers who try both find Leuchtturm the better product for long-term reference use. Browse Leuchtturm1917 at Cityluxe.
Is Leuchtturm1917 good for fountain pens?
The standard 80g/m² paper handles fine-nib fountain pens (EF and F) well with most inks. Medium and broad nibs, or very wet inks, may show minimal ghosting on the reverse page — visible but not disruptive. For fountain pen users who want zero show-through, the 120G Edition at SGD 55 is the correct choice — 120g/m² paper handles wet inks without issue.
How many pages does the A5 Hardcover have?
The standard A5 Medium Hardcover has 251 numbered pages (plus 4 table of contents pages and a few blank pages at front and back). The Thick Edition has 411 numbered pages in the same format.
What is the Bullet Journal Edition 2 and how is it different from a regular dotted notebook?
The Bullet Journal Edition 2 (SGD 58) comes pre-printed with the Bullet Journal method's key pages — index, legend, future log, and migration prompts. A regular dotted A5 hardcover (SGD 47) is blank dotted paper. The Edition 2 costs SGD 11 more and saves you the setup time of creating those pages manually. If you already know how to set up your BuJo, the regular dotted is fine; if you are new to the method, the Edition 2 is faster to start.
Does Leuchtturm1917 offer personalisation in Singapore?
Yes. Cityluxe at 601 Sims Drive offers notebook cover embossing for hardcover A5 and A6 notebooks, and laser engraving for Drehgriffel pens. You can add personalisation at checkout when ordering online. For corporate bulk orders with custom branding, contact our corporate gifting team.
What is the re:combine colour system?
re:combine is Leuchtturm1917's framework for mixing and matching notebooks, Drehgriffel pens, and pen loops across a shared colour palette. If you buy a Sage A5 notebook and a Sage Drehgriffel gel pen, they are designed to coordinate. The same applies across all colours in the re:combine range. It is a way of treating stationery as a personal design system rather than random items. Browse the range at Cityluxe's Leuchtturm1917 collection.
Is the Leuchtturm1917 Some Lines A Day a dated diary?
No — the Some Lines A Day is undated. Each page represents a calendar date (January 1, January 2, etc.) but without year printed — you fill in the year yourself in the designated space each time you start a new year. This means you can begin using it at any point in the year and continue for five consecutive years from that date. SGD 61 at Cityluxe.
What ink does the Drehgriffel Nr. 1 Gel Pen use?
The Drehgriffel Nr. 1 Gel Pen writes in black ink with a 0.6mm tip. It refills with the proprietary Drehgriffel Gel Refill Black (SGD 11 each) or the Refill Pack of 2 (SGD 16). The Drehgriffel Nr. 1 Ballpoint uses royal blue ink and refills with the Royal Blue Refill Pack of 2 (SGD 16).
Where can I buy Leuchtturm1917 in Singapore?
Cityluxe at 601 Sims Drive carries the complete Singapore range including notebooks, pens, pen loops, planners, and specialty journals. Shop online at cityluxe.sg with same-day dispatch for orders placed before 2pm on weekdays, or visit us in-store. View the full Leuchtturm1917 collection here.
Which Leuchtturm1917 format is best for a student?
For lecture notes and study: the A5 Hardcover Dotted or Ruled (SGD 47) — 251 numbered pages for a full semester, rigid cover for writing without a desk, table of contents for subject indexing. Budget-conscious students: the A5 Softcover (SGD 44) gives the same paper in a lighter, cheaper format. For active recall and Cornell method: the B5 Learning Journal (SGD 71) has the best pre-printed layout for structured studying.
