The Refill Question I Get Asked Every Single Week

In six years at Cityluxe's WorkRoom, the question I hear more than any other goes something like this: "My [pen] refill ran out — can I use something else, or will I damage it?" Just this week, a Montblanc rollerball owner came in after seeing the boutique price for the standard Montblanc 2x Rollerball Refills (MB128230VG): SGD 33 for two. He brought his pen along and wanted to know if there was a legitimate alternative he could test before buying. I showed him the Monteverde M22 Rollerball — also a two-pack, SGD 19.50. We opened a blister pack on the spot and fitted a refill into his pen before he paid for it. Same quantity, SGD 13.50 less, and it writes smoothly. He left happy — and he knew it was the right product because he had tested it himself. The week before that, a Cross ballpoint user came in frustrated — he could not find Cross refills easily anywhere in Singapore. We showed him both: the original Cross refill we carry, and the Monteverde C13 equivalent in a two-pack at less than half the price. He asked which one wrote better. Honestly? The Monteverde. Another happy customer. These conversations happen at the WorkRoom all the time. I understand the initial hesitation completely — I felt it myself the first time I swapped the refill in my own Montblanc Meisterstück for a Monteverde Soft Roll. What I got was the same pen, writing noticeably more smoothly with less hand pressure. I have not gone back to the branded Montblanc refill since. But knowing which compatible refill fits which pen is genuinely confusing — Montblanc rollerballs use a threaded collar that no standard refill matches, Lamy ballpoints use a format that looks like Parker but is not, Cross ballpoints are a completely different mechanism. After years of physically testing these at the counter, I have put everything I know into this guide. By the end, you will know exactly what to buy.
Compatibility note: Monteverde USA® refills are not manufactured, licensed or endorsed by the pen manufacturers referenced in this guide. Brand names are used solely to indicate refill compatibility.

Before You Buy

Understanding Pen Refill Formats

The most common mistake when buying a compatible refill is assuming all refills are interchangeable. They are not. Each major brand uses a distinct cartridge format — the physical length, collar geometry, and tip threading must match precisely. The wrong format simply will not seat correctly in the pen.
Format Used by Standard or Proprietary?
G2 / Parker-style ballpoint Parker, Diplomat, Kaweco Sport BP, Retro 51, Montegrappa & Caran d'Ache (most models) Open standard — widest compatibility in the world
Montblanc ballpoint Meisterstück, StarWalker, Bohème ballpoints Proprietary — longer and wider than G2
Montblanc rollerball (LeGrand) Meisterstück LeGrand, StarWalker rollerballs Proprietary — threaded collar, not Euro-compatible
Standard Euro / International rollerball Parker RB, Pelikan, Faber-Castell, Diplomat, Retro 51, Aurora, Visconti, Conklin, Stipula, Omas, Montegrappa RB Open standard — fits 30+ premium brands
Lamy M16 ballpoint All Lamy ballpoint pens Proprietary — distinct shape, not G2-compatible
Lamy M63 rollerball Lamy Safari RB, AL-Star RB, Studio RB Proprietary — ~5mm longer than Euro standard
Cross C1 slim ballpoint Cross Century, Bailey, Calais, Edge, Click Proprietary — slim screw-in body, not G2-compatible
Waterman ballpoint (maxi) Hemisphere, Expert, Carène ballpoints Proprietary — distinct from G2
Waterman rollerball Hemisphere, Expert rollerballs Near-Euro — 109.5 mm vs 110.6 mm Euro standard
Sheaffer K-style VFM, 100, 300, Sentinel, Legacy, Prelude Proprietary — end cap marked "K"
Sheaffer T-style (G2-compatible) Sagaris & Icon — pre-April 2024 only G2-compatible — end cap marked "T"
Lamy T10 fountain pen cartridge Lamy Safari FP, AL-Star FP, Studio FP Proprietary cartridge format

Standard vs Proprietary — Which Brands Lock You In?

Pen Type Standard brands (fit cross-brand refills) Proprietary brands (need exact-match refill)
Ballpoint Parker, Diplomat, Kaweco, Montegrappa, Caran d'Ache (most), Sheaffer T-style Montblanc · Lamy M16 · Cross C1 · Waterman · Sheaffer K-style
Rollerball Parker, Pelikan, Faber-Castell, Visconti, Aurora, Conklin, Retro 51, Diplomat, Montegrappa, Waterman (mostly) Montblanc (threaded) · Lamy M63 (longer)
Fountain pen cartridge Standard International long/short (most European brands) Lamy T10 · Montblanc cartridge
The good news: Cityluxe stocks a precise compatible replacement for every proprietary format in the table above — except the Lamy M63 rollerball and the Sheaffer K-style, where the branded refill remains the correct choice.
Choosing Your Ink

Ink Types — Ballpoint, Soft Roll, Hybrid, Gel and Rollerball Compared

The refill format determines what fits. The ink type determines how it feels. Choosing between them is the real decision.
Ink Type Writing Feel Dry Time Best For Example Products
Standard ballpoint Firm, some drag Instant All-weather reliability, all paper types Original Parker Quinkflow · Schmidt P900
Soft Roll (low-viscosity ballpoint) Noticeably smoother — less drag than standard Very fast Upgrading feel without changing ink type Monteverde Soft Roll (all formats)
Hybrid ballpoint Closest to rollerball smoothness in a ballpoint format Fast (oil-based) Maximum smoothness, daily carry reliability Schmidt EasyFlow 9000
Gel Dark, fluid, very smooth — more ink per stroke Moderate Comfortable long sessions, rich dark line Monteverde Capless Gel (all formats)
Liquid rollerball Effortless — wettest feel of all refill types Slower Premium capped pen experience Monteverde 888 · Schmidt 888 Ceramic

For Luxury Pen Owners

Using Third-Party Refills in Luxury Pens — Safety, Formats and What Actually Fits

When you own a Montblanc Meisterstück or a Waterman Carène, the question is not just compatibility — it is safety. These pens cost several hundred dollars and the fear of damaging one with a wrong refill is legitimate. Here is the complete picture: what fits, what does not, why, and whether using a compatible refill carries any real risk.

Will a Third-Party Refill Damage My Pen?

No — with one condition: you must select a refill explicitly manufactured for your pen brand. A refill labelled "to fit Montblanc" from Monteverde is precision-engineered to the exact dimensions of the Montblanc ballpoint format. It aligns with the pen's internal spring, seats against the barrel threads correctly, and does not create pressure points that could crack the barrel or cause leaks. The only scenario where damage occurs is when a wrong-format refill is forced into a pen it was never designed for. Montblanc's warranty covers manufacturing defects, not damage from incorrect refill installation. Using a correctly-matched compatible refill — one that drops in without force — presents no warranty risk in practice. The risk is in guessing wrong, not in using compatibles generally.

The Two Formats That Catch People Out

Montblanc Rollerball — Threaded Collar: Standard Euro-style rollerball refills (the Schmidt 888 or Monteverde 888 Ceramic) will not fit Montblanc rollerball pens. Montblanc rollerballs use a proprietary threaded collar near the tip that screws into the pen barrel's clutch mechanism — a construction unique to Montblanc. The Monteverde Rollerball for Montblanc is built with this exact thread architecture. It is not a modified Euro refill. Montblanc Ballpoint — Elongated Non-G2 Shape: The standard Parker G2 format (used by roughly 90% of ballpoint pens globally) does not fit Montblanc ballpoints. The Montblanc ballpoint cartridge is longer and uses a distinct collar profile. Monteverde engineers the M13 Soft Roll and M42 Capless Gel to Montblanc's exact dimensional spec — correct barrel length, correct collar width, correct spring interface. These are not G2 refills with a different label.

The Cross C1 — Ultra-Slim Screw-In Mechanism

Cross ballpoint pens use a proprietary thin-body C1 refill with a plastic threaded screw-top that locks into the twist mechanism. Standard G2 refills are physically too wide to enter the barrel. The Monteverde C13 Soft Roll for Cross matches the exact C1 silhouette, including the threaded rear cap. This is a fundamentally different mechanism from G2 — not a minor size variation.

Waterman — Almost Euro, But Not Quite

Waterman rollerball pens use a format that measures 109.5 mm — 1.1 mm shorter than the 110.6 mm Euro standard. A Schmidt 888 or Monteverde 888 Ceramic will physically fit most Waterman rollerball pens, but the writing tip will sit fractionally deeper inside the nose cone than a factory refill. For the most precise fit, use the Monteverde Rollerball for Waterman, which is dimensionally matched to the Waterman 109.5 mm spec.

Montblanc Pen Refills — Cheaper Alternatives & Gel Conversion

Monteverde offers precision-made alternatives in the Montblanc ballpoint and LeGrand rollerball formats at roughly 30–50% less — and goes further by offering a gel conversion Montblanc's own range does not include.

Lamy Pens

Lamy ballpoints use the proprietary M16 format. A standard G2 refill will not fit without an adapter. The Monteverde Soft Roll for Lamy is the most popular compatible alternative — many Lamy owners consider it a permanent upgrade over the original M16.
Compatible Lamy ballpoint models

Lamy Fountain Pen Cartridges (T10 Format)

Lamy fountain pens use the proprietary T10 cartridge. Monteverde makes a compatible T10 substitute in Black and Blue-Black — useful if you want Monteverde's ITF ink formula in your Lamy Safari or AL-Star fountain pen.
Lamy Rollerball — M63 format, genuine brand refill only

Lamy rollerball pens (Safari RB, AL-Star RB, Studio RB) use the M63 refill — approximately 5 mm longer than the standard Euro rollerball with a different collar geometry. No precise compatible replacement exists. For Lamy rollerball pens, use the genuine Lamy M63, available separately.

Parker Pens — The Open G2 Standard

Parker invented the G2 ballpoint standard — now used by roughly 90% of ballpoint pens worldwide. This means you have the most refill options of any pen brand. Four distinct types are available at Cityluxe: standard ballpoint, hybrid, soft roll, and gel conversion.

Cross Pens — C1 Slim (Ballpoint) and Euro (Rollerball)

Cross ballpoint pens use the proprietary C1 slim format — an ultra-narrow design with a screw-in plastic top that is mechanically incompatible with G2 refills. Cross rollerball pens, by contrast, use the standard Euro format and accept any 888-series rollerball refill.

Waterman Pens

Waterman ballpoints use a proprietary maxi format, and like Montblanc they offer no gel refill option. Monteverde covers both: a Soft Roll for smoother ballpoint writing, and a Capless Gel conversion. For Waterman rollerballs, use the Monteverde RB for Waterman — dimensionally matched to the Waterman-specific 109.5 mm length for a perfect fit.

Sheaffer Pens — K-Style and T-Style

Sheaffer ballpoints split into two completely different refill formats depending on the model. Buying the wrong one means it will not fit. Check the end cap of your current refill — the letter printed there tells you which format your pen uses.
K-Style — Most Current Models Models: VFM · 100 · 300 · Sentinel · Legacy · Prelude · Intensity · Reminder Proprietary K-style refill. End cap is marked "K". No compatible substitute — use the genuine Sheaffer K-style branded refill. Shop Sheaffer K-Style →
T-Style — Sagaris & Icon Pre-April 2024 Models: Sagaris BP · Icon BP — produced before April 2024 only T-style accepts the standard G2 format. End cap is marked "T". Schmidt EasyFlow 9000 and P900 are both direct replacements. Schmidt EasyFlow 9000 →

The Universal Rollerball — Standard Euro Format

One refill format covers over 30 premium capped rollerball pen brands. If your pen uses the standard international Euro-style rollerball, both options below work directly — with the choice between resin tube (Monteverde) and metal tube (Schmidt) depending on your preference for weight and feel.
Montblanc and Lamy rollerballs do NOT use this format

Montblanc rollerballs use a proprietary threaded collar. Lamy rollerballs use the longer M63 format. Neither accepts the standard Euro refill — see their dedicated sections above.

Tip Size Guide — EF, F, M, B, SB

Tip size affects line width, ink consumption, and drying time. For Singapore's humid climate, finer tips deposit less ink per stroke — reducing slow-dry issues with gel and rollerball inks on coated paper.
Size Line Width Best For Available In
Extra Fine (EF) ~0.4–0.5 mm Small handwriting, forms, technical writing Monteverde Capless Gel for Parker
Fine (F) ~0.5–0.6 mm Everyday writing, A6 notebooks, journaling Schmidt 888 · Monteverde Capless Gel (Montblanc)
Medium (M) ~0.7–0.8 mm Standard note-taking, A5 notebooks, presentations All formats — most common default
Broad (B) ~0.9–1.0 mm Bold signatures, large handwriting Monteverde Capless Gel for Parker
Superbroad (SB) ~1.0 mm+ Signatures, calligraphic emphasis Monteverde Soft Roll for Parker

How to Change a Pen Refill

Changing a ballpoint or rollerball refill takes under a minute once you know the mechanism. Two main types:
Twist-mechanism pens (Jotter, Lamy Logo, Montblanc Meisterstück)
  1. Twist the barrel anticlockwise to separate the two halves.
  2. Pull the old refill straight out from the lower barrel.
  3. Insert the new refill, tip first, into the lower barrel.
  4. Reassemble by twisting clockwise until firm.
  5. Test on scrap paper to prime the tip.
Click-retract pens (Parker IM, Parker Urban, Cross Bailey)
  1. Unscrew the back end of the barrel (or remove the tail cap).
  2. Retract the tip fully, then slide the refill out from the rear.
  3. Note the spring orientation before removing.
  4. Insert the new refill and spring in the same orientation.
  5. Click to extend and test on scrap paper.
Always prime on scrap paper first

Gel and hybrid inks sometimes need 5–10 strokes on scrap paper after installation to reach the tip. Patchy lines on the first few strokes are normal and resolve within seconds.

Branded vs Compatible Refills — The Cost Case

Singapore-Specific Refill Tips

Schmidt EasyFlow 9000 Fine — ideal for Singapore humidity, Cityluxe
Climate & Care

Writing in Singapore's Heat and Humidity

  • Ballpoint and hybrid inks are the most climate-resilient. Oil-based formulas are unaffected by humidity and perform equally in air-conditioned offices and outdoor conditions. The Schmidt EasyFlow 9000 is particularly well-suited — hybrid oil base with rollerball-level smoothness.
  • Gel refills in heat: Avoid leaving gel-refill pens in direct sunlight or on car dashboards. At high temperatures, gel ink can soften and skip. Store in a bag or drawer when not in use.
  • Rollerball and liquid ink dries more slowly in high humidity. On coated paper, allow a moment before closing the notebook. On standard 80g/m² paper, dry time is fast enough for normal use.
  • Fine tips for humid conditions: Less ink per stroke means faster drying. If you use gel or rollerball ink in Singapore, a Fine tip over Medium reduces smearing risk.
  • Corporate gifting bulk refills: We supply compatible refills in bulk for Parker Jotter, Parker IM, and Sheaffer VFM corporate pen programmes. Contact Cityluxe corporate gifting for a quote.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What refill fits Montblanc ballpoint pens?
Montblanc ballpoints use a proprietary format — longer than the standard G2 and not directly substitutable with it. The Monteverde M13 Soft Roll and M42 Capless Gel are precision-engineered for the Montblanc format. Both are at SGD 19.50 — roughly 30–50% less than the branded Montblanc refill.
Will a third-party refill void my Montblanc warranty?
No. Montblanc's warranty covers manufacturing defects. Using a correctly-matched compatible refill — one that seats without force — presents no mechanical risk and no warranty issue. The only risk is forcing an incompatible format. Every Monteverde refill on this page is dimensionally matched to its pen brand.
What is the cheapest substitute for a Montblanc ballpoint refill?
For ballpoint pens: the Monteverde M13 Soft Roll is SGD 19.50 for a pack of two — Montblanc ballpoint refill prices vary by model. For rollerball pens: the Monteverde M22 Rollerball 2-pack is SGD 19.50, versus SGD 33 for the equivalent Montblanc branded 2-pack (e.g. Mystery Black MB128230VG) — SGD 13.50 less for the same quantity. In both cases the Monteverde writes more smoothly. We open packs in-store so you can test the fit before you pay. The M42 Capless Gel is the same price and adds gel writing — an option Montblanc itself does not offer.
Does a standard Euro rollerball fit a Montblanc rollerball pen?
No. Montblanc rollerballs use a proprietary threaded collar that screws into the barrel clutch — incompatible with the standard Euro format. The Monteverde M22 Rollerball is engineered with the correct Montblanc thread architecture.
What refill replaces the Lamy M16?
The Monteverde Soft Roll for Lamy is a direct M16 replacement, available in Black, Blue, and Blue-Black at SGD 14.25. It fits all Lamy ballpoint pens — Safari, AL-Star, Studio, CP1, 2000, Logo. Standard G2 refills will not fit the M16 format without an adapter.
What is the difference between the Schmidt EasyFlow 9000 and P900?
Both are G2 Parker-style ballpoint refills. The EasyFlow 9000 uses hybrid ink — oil-based reliability combined with liquid-ink smoothness. The P900 is a high-quality standard ballpoint without the hybrid upgrade. If smoothness matters, choose the EasyFlow 9000. If you want a dependable standard ballpoint at lower cost, the P900.
Does the Schmidt 888 fit Lamy rollerball pens?
No — not as a direct fit. The Lamy M63 is approximately 5 mm longer than the Euro standard and has a different collar geometry. For Lamy rollerball pens, use the genuine Lamy M63 refill.
What is the Monteverde 888 Ceramic and which pens does it fit?
The Monteverde 888 Ceramic is a standard Euro-format rollerball refill with a ceramic ball tip. It fits Acme, Aurora, Conklin, Cross Rollerball, Delta, Diplomat, Faber-Castell, Montegrappa, Omas, Parker Rollerball, Pelikan, Retro 51, Stipula, Visconti, and many more. Non-dry performance for up to one year cap-off. SGD 10.50.
What is the difference between Soft Roll and Capless Gel?
Soft Roll is an oil-based ballpoint refill with low-viscosity ink — noticeably smoother than standard ballpoint, fast-drying, reliable in all conditions. Capless Gel is water-based gel ink — darker, more fluid, closer to a rollerball in feel. Gel is the more dramatic upgrade; Soft Roll is a subtler improvement with all-weather reliability.
Do Caran d'Ache pens take standard G2 refills?
Most Caran d'Ache ballpoint pens (Ecridor, 849, Varius) accept the G2 / Goliath format. The Schmidt EasyFlow 9000 and P900 both fit. Bring your pen to our WorkRoom at 601 Sims Drive and we will confirm the format before you buy.

Your Turn

Found a Refill That Works? Come Test One That Might.

Every pen-and-refill pairing story in this guide came from a real person walking through the WorkRoom door. The Montblanc rollerball owner who tested his fit before paying. The Cross user who couldn't find his refills anywhere in Singapore. The Lamy Safari owner who tried the Monteverde Soft Roll and came back for three more packs. If you have found a compatible refill that works brilliantly in your pen — or if you have a pen you have been struggling to match — I would genuinely like to hear about it. These conversations make the guide better for everyone.
