The LAMY AL-star in dark dust is the 2025 Special Edition of LAMY’s best-known aluminium fountain pen, launched alongside its lighter counterpart, mint. The metallic anodised aluminium barrel shifts between dusky violet and smoky graphite depending on the light, and is finished with a colour-matched translucent grip section, a black clip and cap button, and a black polished stainless steel nib.
Lightweight, well balanced and made in Germany, the AL-star is the natural step up from the LAMY Safari — the same familiar triangular grip and ink window, in a metal body. Yes. Dark dust is a LAMY AL-star Special Edition released in 2025 alongside mint. LAMY produces special edition colours for one season only, so once retail stock is sold through the colour is not made again.
What is the difference between the LAMY AL-star and the LAMY Safari?
Both pens share the same shape, grip section and interchangeable nib units. The Safari has an ABS plastic body and is the lighter of the two; the AL-star has an anodised aluminium body, a slightly wider barrel and a translucent rather than solid grip section, which gives it a more substantial feel in the hand.
Which nib size should I choose?
Extra Fine (EF) suits small handwriting, bullet journals and filling in forms. Fine (F) is the most popular all-round choice and behaves well on most office paper. Medium (M) lays down a wetter, broader line that shows off ink shading, and is best on thicker or fountain-pen-friendly paper.
Does the pen come with ink?

Is the AL-star suitable for beginners and left-handed writers?
Yes. The moulded grip section makes it easy to hold the pen at the correct angle, which is why the AL-star and Safari are so often recommended as first fountain pens. Left-handed writers generally get on best with the Extra Fine or Fine nib, which uses less ink and dries faster.
