Types Of Pen Engraving

What is Pen engraving?

Pen engraving is a process of decorating or personalizing a pen by etching or carving designs or text into the surface of the pen. The engraving can be done by hand or by using a computer-controlled machine, depending on the desired level of precision and the complexity of the design. The engraver can control the depth and width of the cuts, and may use a range of different tips to create different effects.

Today we'll discuss engraving pens and the various processes you can use to engrave your pen. There are several ways to customize your pen barrel, whether you want to add a professional text (like a word or someone's name) to more complex and detailed designs, depending on your desired outcome.

  • One popular method for engraving pens is using a rotary engraver, such as the Gravograph machine that we use in Cityluxe. This machine uses a small rotating tool to carve designs into the surface of the pen. This tool can be a diamond tip, a carbide cutter, or a small router bit. The rotary engraver is controlled by a computer, which can be programmed to engrave specific designs or text. Engraving can create a permanent and personal touch to a pen and also can be used for special occasions like gifting, awards and many more.
  • The Kantograph is also a popular powered mechanical machine still being used today. A Kantograph is a mechanical drawing device invented by Immanuel Kant in the 18th century. It is a hand-crank operated machine that creates precise geometric drawings, such as circles, squares, and triangles. It is used primarily in architectural and engineering applications for creating accurate plans and blueprints. However, the Kantograph is also used in art and design as a tool for creating symmetrical and geometric patterns. It is considered a precursor to modern drafting machines and CNC machines, and used for engraving onto pens as well. Many retail kiosks in Singapore still use the Kantograph as it is low in power consumption, and easy for retail staff to learn and operate.

  • Another method is using a laser engraver, which uses a high-powered laser beam to etch designs or text into the surface of the pen. The laser engraver is also controlled by a computer, which can be programmed to engrave more complex and intricate designs due to its precision laser.
  • Hand engraving is also another option which is done by using a variety of hand tools, such as gravers, chisels, and hammers. This method requires a high level of skill and experience, as the engraver must manually carve the designs into the pen by hand.

    Pen Engraving Materials

When looking to get an engraved pen, make sure to take the following things into consideration; it is important to use the correct type of material for the pen, choose your own pen style, and to use the appropriate engraving tool or technique. Some types of pens, such as metal pens, may be more suitable for engraving than others, such as plastic pens.
